Pandemic Parenting: Community Solutions

April 22, 6:30pm – When homeroom is the home: What’s been lost during remote learning and how to tell

It’s one of the most difficult questions to answer for parents: Has this been a lost school year for my child? How can I tell? What should I do if my child is behind?

In partnership with Impact Monadnock Business Ambassadors and Impact Monadnock, The Keene Sentinel presents three 60-minute virtual community listening sessions to assist overstressed parents as they struggle to be the best versions of themselves when even a snow day or a teacher workshop is a calamity.

During the last three months, The Sentinel, funded by a Solutions Journalism Network grant, has explored the immense pressure on parents (and sometimes grandparents) as they attempt to raise children during a pandemic. For many, work-life balance is a concept abandoned months ago. Many parents are gripped with fear about failing their kids, about performing poorly at their jobs, about falling apart emotionally. They find their mental health on the brink, their relationships supremely challenged, their fuses short. While vaccinations this spring and summer might finally bring security, what has been the cost from all of this for families? And how do working parents and their children survive the summer?

In April, The Sentinel, joined by experts in the fields of mental health, child education and general well-being, will discuss the ways and means to help households get through the next several months with the promise of better times ahead. Each expert will be joined by local parents who share their own experiences with the simple message, “You’re not alone.” Each session, available free of charge over Zoom, is kept to one hour, allowing time for questions but mindful of already stretched schedules.
